Former WVU defensive back, Kyzir White took to X on Saturday following WVU’s loss to Penn State calling for the return of former WVU defensive coordinator, Tony Gibson.
White played for WVU from 2014-2017 before being selected in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Chargers. The former Mountaineer would spend four seasons with the team before moving to the Eagles in 2022 and then the Cardinals where he currently resides in 2023.
In six seasons in the NFL, White has accumulated five sacks and five interceptions. Last season with the Cardinals the DB finished with a career high two sacks to go along with one interception.
Gibson was the defensive coordinator for the Mountaineers from 2014-2018 and was the safeties coach a year prior to that, coaching White during that time. In 2017 during White’s senior year, the defensive back finished with 94 tackles, one sack, and three interceptions. He also forced two fumbles, recovering one.
While Gibson was at WVU, the defense was quite impressive, being ranked nationally in multiple categories including in 2015 when WVU’s defense was ranked No. 2 nationally in interceptions, No. 5 in turnovers gained, No. 8 in most opponent three and outs, No. 11 in third down defense and No. 15 in turnover margin.
From the time Gibson took over as DC in 2014 to the time he left in 2018, he had produced seven NFL draft picks including two first round draft picks: Karl Joseph (Round 1), Daryl Worley (Round 3), Nick Kwiatkoski (Round 4), KJ Dillon (Round 5), Rasul Douglas (Round 3), Kyzir White (Round 4), David Long Jr (Round 6).
Once named as the Co Big 12 Defensive Coordinator of the year in 2016 during White’s junior season, Gibson left WVU in 2018 to become the defensive coordinator at NC State where still currently hold the position.
