West Virginia Men’s Soccer moves to 4-0-2 on the season after second straight draw versus the UNC Greensboro Spartans in Morgantown on Tuesday night.
The Mountaineers got the scoring started early in the fifth minute when Marcus Caldeira found the back of the net off of an assist from Isaac Sheer.
The good feelings for WVU would not last long before UNC Greensboro’s Arnaud Tattevin found the equalizer just two minutes later in the sixth minute to make it a 1-1 game.
After some back and forth scoreless play, the Mountaineers received a penalty kick after a handball in the box put the nation’s leading goal scorer, Sergio Ors Navarro, 12 yards in front of the keeper. Able to find the left side of the net for a country leading eighth goal of the season, Ors Navarro gave the Mountaineers a 2-1 lead in the 23rd minute.
That is where the score would stay until 15 minutes through the second half when Mikey Ketteman found another equalizer for UNC Greensboro in the 59th minute. The goal would be the final strike of the game for either team before ending in a 2-2 tie.
It is the second straight game the Mountaineers have tied their opponent despite outshooting the other team. WVU outshot UNCG 16-7 Tuesday night but were only able to get four on goal, the same as Spartans.
This was the first game the Mountaineers had played since dropping from number one to number five in the soccer rankings earlier Tuesday afternoon. The next matchup for WVU Head Coach Dan Stratford’s squad is on the road against Old Dominion on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 7:00 p.m. ET. The game can be viewed on ESPN+
