Former West Virginia shortstop JJ Wetherholt was vital in the Palm Beach Cardinals Florida State League Championship victory Wednesday.
The Palm Beach Cardinals are the Single-A affiliate of the St.Louis Cardinals, who drafted Wetherholt with their first-round selection in the recent MLB draft. They defeated the Lakeland Flying Tigers, Single-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, to win the 2024 Florida State League Championship.
In a winner-take-all game on Wednesday, Wetherholt delivered a go-ahead two-run triple to put the Cardinals up 6-3 in the late stages. In the series, Wetherholt tallied four hits and three RBIs. Throughout the postseason, he hit .421, with eight hits and six RBIs, including a two-run home run in Palm Beach’s first game of the playoffs.
Wetherholt is ranked as the Cardinals’ No. 1 prospect and the No. 18 overall prospect in all of baseball.
