We are now in week four of the 2024 college football season, and West Virginia is still trying to figure things out.

There were high expectations for Mountaineer quarterback Garrett Greene coming into this season, but he has taken his lumps so far. On the Neal Brown Show Thursday, Tony Caridi asked Brown to evaluate his QB’s performance thus far.

“He didn’t play well the first game, he would tell you the same,” Brown said. “He didn’t play well and I think part of that was he just got so amped up. And I think some of it the buildup to the game, which was maybe a little much.”

In week one, against Penn State, Greene was 15 of 28, passing the ball for 161 yards. However, people may have been more concerned with his ground game, as he only rushed for five yards on 10 attempts.

“I thought he was very efficient, fundamentally really good against Albany,” Brown said.

In a 49-14 win over UAlbany (FCS), Greene completed 17 passes on 33 attempts for 236 yards and three touchdowns. He bounced back in the rushing attack with seven carries for 68 yards, including a 40-yard rushing touchdown.

“Last week (against Pitt), really the two interceptions, one of them at the end of the game, you can’t blame him and then the other one was a missed assignment by a receiver,” Brown said. “So I thought he did a really good job, I thought he ran, I thought he was tough as far as a runner. And so I thought he played winning football. Can he play better? Yes, but I thought he played winning football against Pitt.”

In the Backyard Brawl last week Greene was 16 of 30 for 210 yards and two touchdowns, but threw two interceptions like Brown mentioned. On the ground, he took it himself 11 times for 49 yards.

The Mountaineers host Kansas on Saturday for their first Big 12 matchup of the season. The game will be televised on ESPN2 with kickoff set for noon EST.
