West Virginia will be on the road this week as they take on Oklahoma State.
The Mountaineers are coming off a bye week after beating Kansas, while Oklahoma State is coming off back-to-back losses to start conference play. Cowboys head coach Mike Gundy gave his thoughts on West Virginia prior to Saturday’s matchup.
“You got to stop their quarterback; he’s a good runner. Very similar to what we saw last week (against Kansas State). Coach Brown has done a good job with him,” Gundy said of West Virginia and Garrett Greene. “Experience has helped him. And I’m guessing that the relationship he has with his play-callers and position coach helps them. They’re further along now just from experience. And he’s been good at rushing the ball and they do a good job with that.”
Gundy would also comment on WVU’s competitiveness and team logistics.
“They’ve been in their games, every game they’ve played, they’ve been very competitive in it,” Gundy said. “Same coordinators (as last season), same defensive structure. Neal’s offense is the same as what it’s been.”
One of the last things Gundy touched upon is the aspect of West Virginia coming off the bye week. He explained how it may impact their early game plan.
“There’s talk of if you’re in a flow and then all of a sudden you stop, then you start again a week later; some people think that doesn’t work as good. Most people think if you get a bye, you can recover, you should be fresh, guys that are injured, you get guys back,” Gundy said. “You get an extra four-and-a-half days-ish game planning. So, in most cases their concepts in the first quarter and a half should look really good because time has been their friend to get ready for this game.”
Saturday’s game will be televised on ESPN2, with kickoff set for 4 p.m. EST.
