WVU TE Kole Taylor spoke to the media on Monday afternoon and answered some questions about what had made the Mountaineers’ two minute offense be so effective over the last season or so. The questions came after WVU struggled to move the ball at times a game prior against Kansas, but was able to obtain over 150 yards and 15 points in the final minutes of the comeback win.
The first thing Taylor brought attention to was the man behind center, Garrett Greene, “It starts with Garrett. Garrett does a great job. He’s not afraid to use his legs in the two minute (drill) and he understands the situation really well.”
Greene used Taylor very effectively in the final two drives against Kansas including on the first of two touchdowns that brought WVU within one score. The TE was also the recipient of a two-point conversion pass from WR Traylon Ray on a trick play.
But when it comes to fans calling for the offense to run more two minute situation type plays throughout the game, Taylor stated he understood where Head Coach and play-caller Neal Brown was coming from in limiting it’s use.
“We are a run first offense so it’s hard to kind of do the uptempo thing and just be throwing the ball. It’s not what we do necessarily but we do it well when we do do it so it’s just kind of finding a balance about when you should do it or shouldn’t do it.”
This season, Taylor has put up very similar numbers to last season with 11 catches, 133 yards, and two touchdowns through the Mountaineers’ four games this year.
