Redshirt sophomore Nicco Marchiol was called upon to play in the second half against Kansas State on Saturday after starting quarterback Garrett Greene could not return due to injury.
Marchiol was ultimately unable to get the job done and WVU lost 45-18. West Virginia head coach Neal Brown spoke on what he made of the backup quarterbacks’ play.
“We weren’t real productive, we weren’t real productive. Some of it was on him it’s hard when you go in and you play because you don’t get the reps,” Brown said.
Marchiol was six of 13 (46%) throwing the ball for 58 yards and a touchdown. On the ground he was unsuccessful for the most part, not gaining a single yard on nine attempts.
Brown also noted that Marchiol was “hurt” during the week and didn’t have a full week of practice.
“He was hurt so he missed Tuesday’s practice, he didn’t practice on Tuesday. So, he had one basic workday on Wednesday and that was it,” Brown said.
On the season, Marchiol has thrown for 80 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. He also has 63 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown.
It is unknown if Greene will be able to return next week. If not, Marchiol will look to lead the Mountaineers in his home state when West Virginia takes on the Arizona Wildcats.
Bring Green back we need him bad
Nicco is the real deal…stick with him…no int against Arizona…82% completion rate…can run when he must…
as usual we look good against a bad team.3/17 against top 20 teams god nicco made a first down the last play .we could not stop them or1 man only it seems we make every team or 1 player look great
Nicco shows better pocket awareness and accuracy than Greene. While Greene can run in better chunks Nicco is the better quarterback. He jus knows how to do the needed throws better opening the run game up more.
