MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Oct. 21, 2024) – Senior Ceili McCabe of the West Virginia University cross country team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.

McCabe set a program record while collecting a personal best time in the women’s 6k at the Wisconsin Pre Nationals meet on Oct. 19 in Madison, Wisconsin, with a time of 19:10.8.

With the time, McCabe claimed fourth place, aiding in the team’s fourth place overall finish with 207 team points.

Next, the Mountaineers will compete at the Big 12 Championships on Nov. 1. This year’s conference championship will be hosted by Baylor, at the Cottonwood Creek Golf Course in Waco, Texas.

This Week in Men’s Soccer: West Virginia is set for two games this week, beginning with a home contest against Georgia State, Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m. … the Mountaineers will then hit the road for a Sun Belt matchup against James Madison, Sunday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m.

Last Week in Men’s Soccer: The Mountaineers went 1-1 this past week, suffering their first loss of the season at Dayton on Tuesday before defeating South Carolina, Saturday at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium … WVU fell to the Flyers on the road, 5-1, with junior Marcus Caldeira scoring the lone goal of the game for the Mountaineers … senior Max Trethewey collected the assist … against the Gamecocks, freshman Isaac Scheer found the back of the net in the 89th minute, securing a 1-0 victory … senior Frederik Jorgensen and graduate student Sergio Ors Navarro had the assists on the game-winner.

Notes: West Virginia ascended to No. 1 in the United Soccer Coaches poll for the second time this season … the Mountaineers slotted in at No. 12 in the NCAA Soccer Committee’s Top 16 … WVU has had game-winners in the final two minutes the last two occasions of playing home games the same day as a home football game, also doing so against No. 3 Portland a season ago … the Mountaineers sit atop the Sun Belt Standings with 13 points, two clear of second-place Marshall.

This Week in Women’s Soccer: West Virginia prepares to cap the regular season on the road, traveling to take on Houston on Friday, Oct. 25 … kickoff at UH’s Carl Lewis International Complex in Houston, Texas, is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET.

Last Week in Women’s Soccer: WVU went 1-1 last week, first falling 1-0 to No. 19 Texas Tech on Oct. 17, before securing a 2-0 win over Colorado on Oct. 20 … opening the week against the Red Raiders, a Texas Tech penalty in the 41st minute proved to be the difference in the match … the Mountaineers had their own penalty opportunity to equalize in the 67th minute, but fifth-year senior midfielder Lilly McCarthy’s attempt was saved and TTU claimed the victory … however, West Virginia got back on track Sunday against Colorado, as a pair of seniors found the back of the net on Senior Day … midfielder Lisa Schöppl scored in the first half to put WVU ahead, before forward Aria Bilal scored an insurance tally in the second half for the two-goal win … McCarthy earned the assist on Schöppl’s tally, while freshman forward Jordyn Wilson assisted Bilal’s.

Notes: Schöppl’s goal against Colorado was credited as the game winner, the first of her career … the score also was a header off a corner ball, marking WVU’s eighth goal off a corner kick this season and sixth in Big 12 play … McCarthy has assisted three of the eight corner kick goals … West Virginia moved to 1-0 against Colorado all-time, with Sunday’s contest marking the two teams’ first-ever meeting … WVU is now 3-0 against first-time opponents this season … the Mountaineers rank No. 2 in the Big 12 and No. 26 nationally with 6.59 corner kicks per game … redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Smith and the WVU defense also earned their eighth clean sheet of the season against Colorado.

This Week in Volleyball: The Mountaineers return to the road, facing Colorado on Oct. 23 at 9 p.m. ET, in Boulder, Colorado … West Virginia will then take on Texas Tech at home on Oct. 26, inside the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown at noon.

Last Week in Volleyball: WVU picked up its first Big 12 win of the season, defeating UCF, 3-1 on Oct. 16 … the win came with scores of 20-25, 25-20, 25-15 and 29-27 … West Virginia was led by senior outside hitter Hailey Green who collected a season high of 19 kills, while hitting .581 percent … junior outside hitter Quincey Coyle also tied the program’s Big 12 record with six service aces during the match.

Notes: Wednesday’s match versus UCF marked the highest hitting percentage, .292 in a Big 12 match since Nov. 26, 2021 … the Mountaineers now rank second in the Big 12 in service aces, with 122 aces in 73 sets for 1.67 aces per set … redshirt junior Cassidy Tanton ranks seventh in the league in service aces with 28, ninth in kills with 251 and tenth in points with 287.

This Week in Golf: The West Virginia University golf team will wrap up its fall season at the White Sands Collegiate in Paradise Island, Bahamas … the 54-hole tournament will take place at The Ocean Club Golf Course Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Last Week in Cross Country: The Mountaineers claimed fourth place at the Wisconsin Pre Nationals meet in the women’s 6k on Oct. 19, in Madison, Wisconsin … the meet was highlighted by senior Ceili McCabe who finished in fourth place, securing a personal best and program record time of 19:10.8 … freshman Joy Naukot finished next for the Mountaineers, claiming tenth place to break the women’s 6k record for a freshman at WVU, with a time of 19:37.4.

Notes: West Virginia earned the fourth-place finish with 207 team points, among twenty ranked teams … the Mountaineers are currently ranked No. 28 in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Poll, and fourth in the Mid-Atlantic Region.

This Week in Tennis: West Virginia wraps up at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Regional in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Monday and Tuesday.

Last Week in Tennis: West Virginia had four players competing at the ITA Atlantic Regional … senior Michaela Kucharova was the only Mountaineer to win in the main draw of the singles tournament as she advanced to the round of 32 … in doubles play, both pairings advanced the round of 32 before being eliminated.

This Week in Swimming and Diving: West Virginia hits the road for its first dual meet of the season on Friday, Oct. 25, at 2 p.m. EST against Kentucky at the Lancaster Aquatic Center in Lexington, Kentucky.

Last Week in Swimming and Diving: West Virginia played host to the team’s alumni meet … former Mountaineer swimmers and divers attended practice and some even competed against current Mountaineers.

Notes: The Mountaineers will have its biggest test of the regular season against Kentucky … the UK men’s swimming and diving team received five votes in the CSCAA Top 25 poll last week … so far this season, the UK men’s team defeated Ohio State, 191-107 … the women’s team lost to the Buckeyes, 218-80 … in the team’s most recent outing, the Wildcats defeated Akron, 172.5-127.5.

This Week in Rifle: West Virginia hosts Mount Aloysius on Saturday, Oct. 26, at the WVU Rifle Range inside the WVU Shell Building … the match is schedule to begin at noon ET.

Last Week in Rifle: West Virginia defeated No.13 Memphis 4733-4699 …  WVU claimed smallbore 2352-2321 and air rifle 2381-2378 … Griffin Lake posted the highest aggregate score with a career-best 1189 and the top smallbore score with a 592 …  Jacob Wisman and Griffin Lake posted the highest air rifle score, tying for second, with scores of 597.

Notes: The Mountaineers have won 17 straight regular season matches … Jon Hammond collected his 200th career win against No. 5 Georgia Southern … the Mountaineers’ 4735 aggregate and 2352.3 smallbore averages are the second best in the nation … WVU’s 2382.7 is the third best average in the nation …  Ashlyn Blake is averaging a team-leading 1185.6 aggregate average which is the seventh best in the country … Camryn Camp’s 597 air rifle average is the eighth best in the nation … Blake and Griffin Lake’s 589.6 smallbore average is the sixth best mark in the country and leads WVU.
