News broke last week of West Virginia head coach Neal Brown deciding to let go of defensive coordinator Jordan Lesley, who had been with Brown since his time at Troy.
Inside linebackers coach Jeff Koonz, who is also the team’s special teams coordinator, was promoted to interim defensive coordinator. Monday, WVU senior defensive lineman Sean Martin was asked about the change.
“Not any major changes just doing our job. The same responsibilities as we had before,” Martin said when asked if the practices have been any different with Koonz now at the helm of the defense.
Martin was recruited by Lesley and, therefore, has built a relationship with him. He stated that he and some of his teammates didn’t totally understand the decision, but he acknowledged that college football can act as a business.
“Coach Lesley is a great guy; he recruited me to come here. It’s a business and Coach Brown made a decision,” Martin said. “We don’t really understand but it had to be done, I guess.”
Martin also said how the defense has performed well in stopping the run, but their biggest problem is stopping the pass and putting pressure on the quarterback.
This season, Martin, a product of Bluefield, West Virginia, has 11 total tackles (4 solo), including two and a half tackles for loss and one and a half sacks.
West Virginia travels to take on Cinnnati this week, looking to improve their conference and overall record.
Only 11 total tackles as starting DE is not power 4 worthy of starting sounds like it’s just as much player faults as coaching issues, your a power 4 starting DE get it done or simply remove yourself them are embarrassing stats thru this amount of games played
unreal … 59.4 pff ranking so far this season. which is right on the line between above average and good, and you only look at tackles. Negativity does not help anyone!
But did you play football? Or you just like all the other WVU that get drunk and think they know everything?
