The West Virginia women’s volleyball team lost to Cincinnati, 3-0, Thursday afternoon in an away match with scores of 16-25, 22-25, and 22-25. This marks the Mountaineers’ 15th loss of the season and fourth loss in a row.
In the first set, the Bearcats put down the first four kills with a total of 18 for the set. The Mountaineers fell behind offensively with only seven kills. West Virginia tied the score 13-13 with a service ace by senior Sydney Reed. Cincinnati later pulled ahead when West Virginia made consistent errors later ending the set with a service error.
Cincinnati led early in the second set, 4-0, until West Virginia got on the board with a kill by sophomore Lauren Bodily assisted by graduate student Lauren DeLo. Although the Mountaineers faltered, they led with 16 kills and five blocks compared to the Bearcats 14 kills and three blocks.
The third set looked similar to the second set. Cincinnati kept the score on lock down not allowing the Mountaineers to pull ahead. With four kills and an error by the Bearcats, the Mountaineers made a 5-0 run taking the score from 11-18 to 16-18.
The Mountaineers led both teams with attacks and assists. Redshirt junior Cassidy Tanton had 29 attacks and DeLo put up 35 assists.
The Mountaineers now have a record of 8-15 (2-10 in Big 12). They will take on No. 11 Arizona State next Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in the Coliseum.
