MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Nov. 27, 2024) – The West Virginia University volleyball team (8-20, 2-15 Big 12) was taken down by No. 22 TCU, 3-0 on Wednesday night inside of the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown.

TCU claimed the win with scores of 22-25, 22-25 and 16-25.

West Virginia was led by sophomore middle blocker Maddy McGath who tallied 13 kills, three total blocks and hit .206% on the night. 

Senior outside hitter Hailey Green raked in eight kills as well as freshman outside hitter Nina Svetina, as the frosh notched a new career high.

Graduate student setter Lauren DeLo dished out 27 assists and 12 digs, adding her sixth double-double of the season.

The Mountaineers struck first in the match, as a block from Green and junior middle blocker Chalina Lederer made the score, 1-0. West Virginia kept the score tied at three and four points, before a 5-0 TCU scoring run made the score, 11-5. The Mountaineers continued to trail until a late offensive strike of six points got the squad with one point, 22-21. TCU held off the Mountaineers with a pair of kills, taking the first set, 25-22.

The second set started off with an early tie, as a kill from McGath knotted the tally at one all.  A string of four West Virginia points tied the set up again at six. The Mountaineers stormed ahead with a 6-1 run, taking the largest lead of the set, 12-8. Points were traded back and forth by both teams, as a kill from Green tied the score once again at 17. TCU responded with four straight points, taking the lead, 21-20. A kill from McGath tied the score up for the final time at 22, before TCU went on to take the set with a 3-0 run, 25-22.

The Mountaineers kicked off the third set after a pair of Svetina kills made the score, 3-1. The Horned Frogs clapped back with four straight points, making the tally, 5-3. A kill from junior middle blocker Laila Ibrahim followed by a TCU error knotted the score at 10 all. The Horned Frogs persisted, taking a large 17-12 lead. A kill from Green and Svetina looked promising for West Virginia, as they trail 23-16. TCU showed no remorse and went on to take the third and final set, 25-16.

Next, West Virginia welcomes No. 16 Baylor to Morgantown on Nov. 29, for the last match up of the regular season. It’s Senior Day, as the Mountaineers honor departing seniors Lauren DeLo, Hailey Green, Kristen McBride and Sydney Reed. First serve is set for 2 p.m. ET, inside of the WVU Coliseum.
