The West Virginia Women’s Basketball team defeated High Point University 89-54 in their first game of the Gulf Coast Showcase holiday tournament Friday afternoon. The Mountaineers are ranked No. 12 in the nation and hold a record of 7-0. 

The Mountaineers had an 11-1 run to start the game strong, finishing the first quarter with a score of 22-7. They had ten steals total in 15 minutes of play only allowing the panthers 9 points in the second quarter ending the half with a score of 40-16. Senior JJ Quinerly surpassed her season average with 18 points in the first half. 

During the third quarter, the Mountaineers’ energy didn’t change. They scored first finishing with 21 points, nearly doubling High Point’s total with a score of 61-31 at the end of the quarter. High Point stepped up their game during the fourth quarter scoring 23 points but could not manage to close the gap. 

The Mountaineers dominated the entirety of the game with 27 points off turnovers compared to High Point’s eight. Quinerly led the Mountaineers putting up 22 points. Freshman Jordan Thomas played an impressive game with a career high 18 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Sydney Woodley had eight steals for West Virginia. 

The Mountaineers will play Boise State Saturday evening at 5:00 p.m. in the semi final. The Broncos have a record of 7-0.
