MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Nov. 29, 2024) – The West Virginia University volleyball team (8-21, 2-16 Big 12) fell in three sets, 3-0 to No. 16 Baylor on Friday afternoon inside of the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown.
The Bears took the match with score of 19-25, 21-25 and 20-25.
In her final match as a Mountaineer, senior outside hitter Hailey Green led the floor in kills, tallying 15 on the afternoon. Green also contributed five digs and two blocks.
Freshman outside hitter Nina Svetina had a breakout game, notching 14 kills and points, while hitting .313% for a new career high.
Graduate student setter Lauren DeLo dished out 34 assists, while graduate student libero Sydney Reed collected 12 digs.
A kill from Green tied the match up early in the first set, at one all. Baylor proceeded with the lead, until a 3-0 West Virginia scoring run tied it all up again at seven. The Bears went on to lead by as many as eight points, before a trio of points from the Mountaineers made the score, 22-17. West Virginia benefited from a Baylor error, followed by a kill from Green at the Bears set point, 24-19. BU went on to take the set with a kill, 25-19.
West Virginia took the lead first in the second set, as a pair of Baylor errors made the score, 2-0. The Bears gave up another error, making the West Virginia lead, 7-6. BU responded with a 3-0 run, taking their largest lead of the set, 9-7. A kill from junior middle blocker Laila Ibrahim followed by an error from Baylor gave WVU back the advantage, 12-11. The Bears attempted a comeback with a 3-0 run, before a pair of kills from Svetina tied the score at 14. Baylor responded and took what looked to be a dominant 19-16 lead. West Virginia wasn’t done yet, adding four straight points to change the lead yet again, 20-19. The Bears shut the WVU scoring run down, clinching up five points and the 24-20 lead. Green added the last kill of the set for WVU, before the Bears went on to take the second, 25-20.
Green started off the third and final set by knotting the tally at one, two and three points before a 10-0 Baylor run stranded the Mountaineers, 13-3. West Virginia brought back the momentum, as a pair of kills from Svetina followed by a service ace from DeLo let the squad trail, 16-7. WVU got the score within four points, after 4-0 run made the tally, 20-16. Kills from Svetina and Green attempted to keep WVU alive at the Baylor set point, 24-20. The Bears went on to seal the match with a kill, 25-20.
With the loss, West Virginia concludes the 2024 campaign and marks the final match at WVU for seniors Lauren DeLo, Hailey Green, Kristen McBride and Sydney Reed.
