MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Dec. 2, 2024) – After being named to the Gulf Coast Showcase All-Tournament Team and leading the Mountaineers to a runner-up finish, senior guard JJ Quinerly has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
The Norfolk, Virginia native averaged 21.7 points per game for the week, scoring a season-high 29 against No. 5 Texas on Sunday. She added a 22-point performance against High Point on Friday and an 18-point game against Boise State on Saturday.
Additionally, Quinerly averaged three rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.3 steals per game.
The Mountaineers return to the floor on Friday, Dec. 6, when they host East Tennessee State for Education Day inside the WVU Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 10:30 a.m. ET.
This Week in Volleyball: West Virginia concluded the 2024 season.
Last Week in Volleyball: The Mountaineers were swept by No. 22 TCU on Nov. 27, 3-0 inside of the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown … West Virginia concluded the season against No. 16 Baylor on Nov. 29, dropping a three-set match, 3-0 in Morgantown.
Notes: West Virginia celebrated senior day on Nov. 29, as seniors Lauren DeLo, Hailey Green, Kristen McBride and Sydney Reed were honored … the Mountaineers finished No. 5 in the league with 164 service aces in 111 sets, averaging 1.48 aces per set … redshirt junior outside hitter Cassidy Tanton finished No. 7 in the conference, averaging 0.37 aces per set … sophomore setter Alexis Finnvold picked up the No. 10 in the Big 12 with her 8.62 assists per set … graduate student Sydney Reed landed at No. 10 in the league with her 3.59 digs per set … junior middle blocker Laila Ibrahim was tabbed at No. 10 in the Big 12 as she averaged 1.06 blocks per set.
This Week in Women’s Basketball: The Mountaineers are back at home this week when they host East Tennessee State on Friday at 10:30 a.m. ET inside of the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown … the contest serves as the squad’s Education Day match.
Last Week in Women’s Basketball: The Mountaineers moved to 8-1 on the season with two wins and one loss last week… West Virginia produced a runner-up finish at the Gulf Coast Showcase where JJ Quinerly and Jordan Harrison were named to the all-tournament team … WVU opened play with an 89-54 win over High Point on Nov. 29 before defeating Boise State, 82-47, on Nov. 30… the Mountaineers lost in the championship game to No. 5 Texas by a final score of 78-73 on Dec. 1.

Notes: Coach Tim Flynn’s squad is currently 3-0 … the Mountaineers have jumped out to a 3-0 start in three consecutive seasons post-World War II for just the second time program history and since 1962-1964 … West Virginia also appeared in the top 25 of the NWCA Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll, moving back up to No. 18 for the second time this season … WVU matched its current ranking two weeks ago after beginning the campaign at No. 19 in the preseason poll … it marked WVU’s first appearance in the preseason poll since 2016 and fifth time overall – 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2016 … this was also the second highest preseason ranking in program history, behind only a No. 10 ranking in 2005 … individually, seven Mountaineers land in the fifth edition of FloWrestling’s rankings, including No. 23 Jett Strickenberger (133), No. 13 Jordan Titus (141), No. 3 Ty Watters (149), No. 28 Sasha Gavronsky (157), No. 4 Peyton Hall (165), No. 29 Brody Conley (174) and No. 32 Austin Cooley (197) … additionally.
