Things are very interesting in Morgantown this week surrounding the new WVU Football head coach vacancy. Athletic Director Wren Baker took some time to speak to the media on Tuesday afternoon following the firing of Neal Brown on Sunday.
During his open statement, Baker spoke a lot about what he will be looking for in all the candidates applying for the job.
“We’re not limited to only head coaches or only coordinators. We want a proven leader, someone who can understand and embrace West Virginia. Someone that understands roster construction in this modern and changing world of college athletics.”
Baker kept going, detailing how he will start to narrow down his search to who he sees is best fit, “Right now, the net that we’ve casted is very wide. So the next 24 hours will be narrowing that down and starting to have some conversations. Initially those will be zoom type conversations and then over the next few days really getting that down to a handful that we would want to see in person.”
Right before Baker finished his opening statement, Baker made it very clear on exactly what he will be looking for in a coach, and what his nonnegotiable is going to be.
“Then it is important that we have a leader and not just a coach. Someone that is going to make sure academics and life enrichment is still important. Those are things that Coach Brown did an unbelievable job doing and we want to continue.” Baker then added, “Someone with integrity. I feel like that’s a nonnegotiable.”
If they go “bargain basement” and lower themselves to take Rodriquez back, my four season tickets and a parking pass will be available after I turn them in. That will be it for me after 30 years.
