The West Virginia women’s basketball team beat East Tennessee State 85-40 in Friday’s matchup. In celebration of Education Day, students from local elementary and middle schools were provided with complimentary tickets to attend the game. Each school was assigned a Mountaineer to support. 

The students were nothing short of electric when cheering this team to victory. In just the first quarter, the Mountaineers scored 23 points compared to ETSU’s ten. Junior Sydney Shaw scored 6 points within the first three minutes, 13 points total, and two steals. 

In the second quarter, West Virginia scored 21 points, only allowing ETSU to manage six. Eight three-point shots were made in the first half, the most this season. The score was 44-16 at the half. 

The Mountaineers started the second half strong with a 14-0 run. Fifth-year Kylee Blacksten led the Mountaineers with six points and an assist. With under a minute left to go in the third quarter, senior Kyah Watson hit a three, leaving the score 65-24. 

With a completely new lineup during the fourth quarter, the Mountaineers still managed to put up 20 points. Freshman Destiny Agubata saw significant time on the court and scored eight points. 

Junior Jordan Harrison reached 1,000 career points during Friday’s matchup. Key player JJ Quinerly was not seen in the game.

The Mountaineers are ranked 15th in the nation with a record of 9-1. They will travel to take on Temple next Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
