The Mountaineers handed Georgetown their second loss of the season on Friday with a 73-60 win in the Big 12-Big East Battle.
A big second-half run helped West Virginia in the victory. As we continue to learn more and more about this WVU team, here are some takeaways from the win.
Javon Small Can Ball
Javon Small did it once again for the Mountaineers. He had 26 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals. He, as well as Tucker DeVries, hit the big shots when West Virginia needed them. Small continues to make a name for himself in the Big 12 conference. He showed out at Oklahoma State last year, and now he’s doing the same in Morgantown. Small handled the ball well, making defenders look silly at times, and was ultimately a huge factor in the win.
Buck Harris is Everywhere
Sencire ‘Buck’ Harris had a career-high nine rebounds on Friday. He bounced around the floor and continued to play stellar defense, picking up three steals and two blocks. You won’t see Harris score 10+ or 15+ points a game consistently, but he still contributes to the offense. He had six points and four points in the win. Buck might be one of those guys you don’t hear about a ton, but he significantly makes a difference in the game.
Eduardo OH MY
Eduardo Andre is another one of those guys. The 7-foot center had four blocks in 16 minutes, giving the Mountaineers momentum when they needed it most. He also had four points and three rebounds. With West Virginia somewhat lacking height, it’d be interesting to see what Andre could do with more minutes.
Live and Die by the Three
This has been a previous takeaway, and it’s quite simple, actually. When the Mountaineers are on from three, they are on as a team. When they’re off, boy are they off. They struggled in the first half from beyond the arc, shooting just three of 11, but in the second half, they picked it up and finished nine of 26. It was mostly Small and DeVries but there are other Mountaineers who could knock down the triple and get things going.
Let’s Go…….. Mountaineers
The WVU Coliseum felt the most alive it had since the Mountaineers upset No. 3 Kansas last year. The fans were definitely into it in the second half and could very well have affected the outcome towards the middle of the half. The players were getting the crowd into it and even coach Darian DeVries was waving his arms up and down. If the fans continue to show up and be loud in Big 12 play, it could greatly help the Mountaineers.
You left out one stat on Smalls and Harris ….TURNOVERS ! BOTH need to value the ball better ! It showed that they hadn’t played fir a week ! Took them 3/4 of the game to get moving ! When they play with ENERGY they are much better than when they walk it up the floor and stand around on offense !
They have potential ….IF they bring IT every night !
Let’s GO Mountaineers !!
