Javon Small has impressed the Mountaineer fan base with his stellar court performances so far this season. The senior, originally from Indiana, is playing his first season with West Virginia after attending East Carolina and Oklahoma State.
During his freshman year at East Carolina, Small saw action in 16 games and averaged 2.0 points per game and 9.1 minutes per game. In his sophomore season, he saw a significant increase in playing time, averaging 34.7 minutes played and being one of the nation’s most improved players before a season-ending injury. Small had a career-high 27 points in a matchup against Indiana.
As a junior at Oklahoma State, Small averaged team highs with 15.1 points and 4.1 assists in 33.0 minutes per game. His streak of 28 consecutive free throws was one of the 10-longest in OSU history.
Since arriving at WVU, Small has continued to improve on the court. He has played 287 minutes, averaging 35.9 minutes per game, so far this season. He scored a season-high 31 points against Gonzaga, totaling 43 minutes in that game alone.
In the most recent matchup for the Mountaineers against Georgetown, Small put up 26 points, made four three-point shots, had five rebounds, and three assists. Head coach Darian DeVries described Small as a “confident, veteran point guard” and shared he is “all about winning.”
Small looks to increase his stats Tuesday evening as the Mountaineers take on North Carolina Central at home. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
