The Mountaineers have gotten off to a fast start this season, and they have seen standout performances from several players up to this point. Here’s a closer look at WVU’s stat leaders.
Point Guard Javon Small has been the best player for the Mountaineers this season statistically. Transferring from Oklahoma State earlier after last season, he’s been arguably playing at the highest level of his career. Averaging 19.8 points per game (No. 1 in the Big 12), 5.3 rebounds, and 5.0 assists while shooting at a 42.9% clip from the field. Small is also averaging over 17 points per game since the injury to Tucker DeVries and has been regarded as one of the best players in the Big 12.
Amani Hansberry has been a key piece in the Mountaineers’ success thus far, averaging 9.6 points per game and a team-leading 5.9 rebounds. Hansberry has been crucial for WVU while playing two positions between center and power forward. Hansberry transferred to WVU from Illinois.
Another key part of the Mountaineers’ success so far is none other than Freshman Johnathan Powell. Powell has emerged as a starter for the team following the injury to Tucker DeVries and has been able to play a key role. In 26 minutes per game, Powell averages 9.3 points and 2.2 rebounds per game while shooting 38% from the three-point line.
