The West Virginia Mountaineers have had one of their best seasons in a decade. This comes at the hand of a revamped roster and first-year head coach Darian DeVries.

The Mountaineers are currently 13-4, with only one loss at home. After having the most losses the program has ever had last year, DeVries has found a way to win against some very tough competition.

The Mountaineers have three top-ten wins this year—yes, “three top-ten wins.” They have beaten Kansas at their court for the first time ever, Gonzaga on a neutral site, and just recently, second-ranked Iowa State at home.

Darian DeVries is an early finalist for coach of the year, and senior guard Javon Small is making a case to be named the Big 12 player of the year. He leads the league in points at 19.8 points per game. He has also impacted winning, especially with Tucker DeVries still being out.

Key contributors such as freshman Jonathan Powell and sophomore Amani Hansberry have been huge contributors to the mountaineer. This is a team that is slowly beginning to get the recognition they deserve. Teams do not want to run into the Mountaineers come March.

This has to do with their top-10 nationally ranked defense and great coaching in close games. Fans and the team are eager to get Tucker DeVries back because he could elevate this team to a whole new level.

The Mountaineers have two conference games this week. They begin with a game on Jan. 21 at home against Arizona State. They then close the week with a tough road game against Kansas State on Jan. 25.
