After an off night for Javon Small, head coach Darian DeVries talks about what the team needs to do to help him offensively.
WVU dropped their fourth game of the season on Tuesday to Arizona State at home 67-65. The team as a whole had a rough night offensively, shooting only 31% from the field and 13.8% from the three-point line. Javon Small who leads the team in scoring put up 14 points, but shot 2/11 from the field.
“We put so much on Javon on a night that they made it hard for him to get loose and free you know, we got to find different ways to score, that’s been our struggle,” Darian DeVries said.
Despite the poor shooting from Small, he still led the Mountaineers in points. The Mountaineers have struggled to find a consistent scorer to back up Javon Small since the injury to Tucker DeVries, who was averaging 14 points per game before he got hurt.
“He’s a smart player, on a night he’s not shooting it well, on the timeouts and stuff we got to get more paint touches, not only for him but for others too,” DeVries said.
West Virginia will travel to take on Kansas State on Saturday at 6:00 pm EST. The game will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
