Today’s press conference looked different from most in the past. Today, Rhett Rodriguez took to the mic to answer questions and offer insight into how his quarterback room looks so far and his plans for what he would like it to look like for this upcoming season.

Rodriguez, who is now the head quarterbacks coach, kept it real when talking about his quarterbacks today. “I’ve been impressed so far,” said Rodriguez. “I think we have a lot of depth at that position.”

The Mountaineers have a unique and, some might say, desirable situation, as they have six amazing quarterbacks on their roster for the 2025 season. Most teams only have three or four, but having six is an unheard-of number of quarterbacks to have competing under one system. Between returning Nicco Marchiol, or 4-star true freshman Scotty Fox, it is unclear who will receive the coveted starting job.

If the other five do not receive the starting job they will still have work to do. Rodriguez intends to have his quarterbacks follow closely as they gun for that starting job. This is because Rhett Rodriguez has his sights set on having three of them game-ready at all times.

“That’s something where we always say we want at least three guys ready to go ready to win with,” said Rodriguez. “I’m trying to recruit people who were better than I was, so we got multiple quarterbacks who are more talented, better than I was.”

That is high praise coming from Rhett Rodriguez who excelled at the quarterback position when he played at Arizona and Louisiana-Monroe to finish out his playing career in 2021.

Rodriguez is aware of the frustrations his father has been having when it comes to working out the rust and the kinks. However, he is confident that he can get his quarterbacks to shake off that rust before the season starts.

“Of course the first spring there is going to be some kinks to workout,” said Rodriguez. “But, I have been pretty pleased with where we are right now.”

With spring advancing at a seemingly rapid pace, Rhett and Rich are on the clock. It is not a matter of if but a matter of when they can shake the rust off and get the quarterbacks and the other personnel to connect. When that happens, the West Virginia Mountaineers will look like a completely different football team than they were a year prior.
