Today marked day eight of spring practice; the last day of spring practice before Rich Rodriguez sends his players home to enjoy some time off for spring break. According to wide receivers coach, Ryan Garrett, the wide receivers are performing really well heading into the spring holiday.
“We got a pretty good group right now,” said Garrett, “when you are this early in the process, especially coming in as a new staff.”
In other words, Garrett is pleased with his group of receivers and how they are performing early on despite the challenges presented by having brand-new personnel and schemes. These challenges have been prevalent in every single area on the field. The offensive line, the defense, and the quarterbacks are amongst a few of the groups who have shown early sings of struggle adapting to the new coaching style and play style of Rich Rodriguez.
While the wide receivers may be performing fantastically, Coach Garrett and his staff are still connecting the dots and figuring out who fits in the different schemes.
“We’re still trying to figure out where everybody fits,” said Garrett. “We’ve been lucky; we have had a few guys come in with us that know the system, that have been in the system, so they’ve helped the other receivers learn what they are doing.”
This is a unique situation that the receivers find themselves in as Coach Rodriguez and Coach Garrett were able to bring in receivers from Jax State who know how Coach Rodriguez operates and know how to help the other receivers get on the same page.
The receivers are in an incredible position heading into spring break. With an entire summer ahead of them, as well as the rest of spring practice to continue to develop and grow into the game-ready receivers Garrett and Rodriguez want them to be.
