Former West Virginia kicker Pat McAfee is certainly no stranger to the Backyard Brawl. McAfee opened his YouTube show “The Pat McAfee Show” on Friday by talking about his alma mater’s performance against rival Pitt on Thursday.
The Mountaineers lost the game 38-31, and McAfee talked about what he liked from West Virginia as well as taking small shots at the rival Panthers.
“Although the outcome wasn’t my favorite, it was a hell of a game,” McAfee said of the game. The Backyard Brawl was awesome.”
McAfee then decided to congratulate Pitt fans for showing up, after reports there would be more West Virginia fans in attendance than Pitt.
“Pitt showed up last night. Congrats to the University of Pittsburgh’s student section and fans and alumni,” McAfee said.
With a Pittsburgh sports record crowd of 70,622, McAfee joked it would probably be the last time the stadium fills up.
“That might be the last time Acrisure Stadium looks that way for a Pitt game this season,” McAfee said.
McAfee then gave his thoughts on West Virginia’s performance on the field, saying he was pleasantly surprised by what he saw.
“I didn’t know any of the players on our team. I knew JT Daniels was going to be a guy. I knew Legg was kicking. I didn’t know there was still a Stills on the team on the d-line — that’s awesome, he’s a guy,” McAfee said.
McAfee then talked about Bryce Ford-Wheaton’s drop which gave Pitt the go-ahead pick-six with less than three minutes left in the game.
“Bryce Ford-Wheaton who ultimately is going to have a rough couple days and he’s going to be questioned about that for a long, long time,” McAfee said.
McAfee concluded saying he is happy with what he saw and is excited for this team going forward.
“This West Virginia team didn’t have high expectations going into the season I don’t think, but we got a lot of young guys. We got a fast team, we got an electrifying team and JT Daniels seems to be a dog,” McAfee said. “West Virginia showed up and I think made me a lot more happy about where the team is.”
